The WhatsNext verdict
If you want to roam a 1:1-scale universe and study astronomical objects, SpaceEngine delivers an unusually expansive planetarium-like experience. Skip it if you need missions, progression, or a consistently smooth, simple interface.
What it does best
The universe feels impossibly vast and genuinely awe-inspiring
It turns the entire known and imagined universe into an explorable place
A whole universe exists for you to roam without a prescribed destination
A remarkably deep and believable astronomical simulation
What might put you off
More planetarium and sandbox than conventional game
Demanding interface and uneven technical performance
The setup
What you are walking into
SpaceEngine is a 3D astronomy program and game engine developed by Russian astronomer and programmer Vladimir Romanyuk. Using real astronomical catalogs and procedural generation, it creates a three dimensional planetarium representing the entire universe. Users can travel through space in any direction or speed, and forwards or backwards in time. It uses pseudo-random numbers to procedurally create any kind of planetary system, nebula or galaxy.
