The WhatsNext verdict

If you want atmospheric puzzle-platforming where sound, spaces, and implication do most of the storytelling, Inside delivers with unusual precision. Choose it less for clear answers or long-term progression and more for a tense, compact journey that invites interpretation.

What it does best

  • A suffocating atmosphere of dread and uncertainty

  • Puzzles that emerge naturally from the world

  • A world that communicates through implication

  • Sound that makes the quiet feel dangerous

What might put you off

  • An opaque and abrupt ending

  • Short, trial-and-error progression

The setup

What you are walking into

Inside is a puzzle-platformer developed by Playdead, presented in a 2.5D side-scrolling format with a dark, predominantly monochromatic visual style. The player controls an unnamed boy navigating a dystopian environment, solving environmental puzzles, avoiding hostile guards and creatures, and using a mind-control device to manipulate bodies in order to progress. The game features no dialogue or HUD, relying on visual and audio cues to guide the player through its increasingly surreal and dangerous settings.
